Today is the day friends! This evening my husband and I will be headed to the hospital for me to be induce.
I'm excited that the time has finally come to give birth to our first child. We have waited anxiously until this moment (baby arrival) to find out the sex... That's right! We have no idea what the sex is !!!
So, nevertheless 'little mod human' will be here over the weekend and I can't wait to share with you all the news of what gender the baby is.

As for antiques and all things vintage, my husband Mr. Rugged took me to a 'new' antique shop this afternoon. I'm sad and happy all at once to have discovered this charming old home filled with the most amazing antiques however slightly disappointed that this will be my first and last time there (for at least the next month or so) due to having a new baby to now take care of. Talk about bittersweet bliss...
The shop owner Nancy was the sweetest lady ever and I was more than happy to purchase these lovely antique brooches from her. Usually I have an absolute favorite, but with these pieces I cannot simply settle for just one... I love em all!

For the greatest while (in the beginning) I've only sold vintage handbags and luckily build relationships with customers based on this fact. Somehow as years gone by and I've continued to scout and sell vintage, I've open my shop to featuring just more than purses. Mod Human now has an array of vintage jewelry, shoes, scarves and dresses. This is certainly a great thing but I must admit that sometimes on rare occasions, I miss focusing on my first vintage love... the glorious handbag. Why? Because I'm forever infatuated with how women can mix and match their wardrobe to compliment any... yes any vintage handbag available.

Today was a typical day of completing inventory list, cleaning up the house and taking a short nap after lunch hour. Everything was going according to plan on this typical Wednesday evening... that's until I checked the mail box... and there it was waiting for me all alone in a brown paper envelope! My new travel backpack from Baggu. "Where were you when I needed you?" I asked the nylon backpack. This bag is something I truly needed over the summer, during all of our fun road trips. A week earlier I figured now's the time to order it since all I have is nothing but time on my hands...however I'm quite sure that too is going to change on Friday (when the baby is delivered.)
Back to the nylon backpack, don't you just love it! The color is papaya - sweet and bright and hard to loose in the back of my closet or left behind in a cafe (which I've done on plenty occasions with my much more expensive yet boring handbags) I can't wait to wear it :)

I baked an apple pie last night, and although this is technically only the 3rd apple pie I've ever baked, this one for some reason was a complete failure. I'm not quite sure what went wrong but the bottom crust total evaporated and/or turned into mush. Very disappointing, since it was something I've been craving for a while. My husband, Mr. Rugged said that it taste fine and reminds him of a cobbler of some sort, but I'm not buying it!

Thank you ladies for your best wishes and thoughtful comments :) They definitely were comforting and made me smile.
Things on this end (as far as the minor 'set back') are better... I'm no longer afraid of staying home by myself and starting to feel comfortable again.
Today was bright and sunny and instead of spending my Saturday home, I ventured out from my side of town into Atlanta to visit my mother and sister. Of course we did a little vintage shopping but I guess the main highlight of the day was finding a few pair of new shoes for myself. Since being pregnant, I've managed to outgrow every pair I've owned (besides my dopey black exercise sneakers and a pair of fluffy Ugg 'want-to-be' boots.) So you can imagine my shoe options for everyday wear was extremely limited. I guess the rumor is officially true, or at least that's the case for me...
Another reason I consider my shoe shopping event a highlight is because the truth of the matter is, I rarely buy myself things anymore. Since opening and running the vintage shop (which started out as a hobby and somehow slowly became my life) the only purchases I make with extra money always seem to go back into my business. Looking back on it, maybe I have sorta let my love and passion for vintage get the best of me, which in return had left me looking a little rough around the edges. lol
Nevertheless, I'm happy to have new shoes and just wanted to share my excitement and the reason for :)

However, I did find one item for the shop. Yes, only one! And I'm very satisfied with that... It's a stunning colorful 60s halter frock. Think summer BBQ's and outdoor concerts. I'll probably hold on to this gem until the spring hits... unless yall think I should add it right away :/ .... who knows!

a first time for everything

This past weekend has been a little frustrating, due to having our house broken into by mean robbers... I went out of town with my husband Mr. Rugged for a day and sadly came back to having our personal things taken from us. My husband is an incredible man when it comes to these type of situations and was more concern with my well being. Of course I cried the moment I realized that intruders were in our home and made a mess of our things. I guess we can think of it as a 'welcome to the neighborhood' being that we just moved into this house a month ago. Also being pregnant certainly does not help the situation. Needless to say, things can be replaced and life certainly goes on and more importantly I'm happy to have my husband here along the way to keep me calm and grounded.
However, I think we may have to get a watch dog now :/

I've recently moved outside of Atlanta into a more quite, family oriented environment just two weeks ago and there's nothing more exciting then exploring a new side of town. Yesterday, (after an extensive internet search) I decided to pack up the car with tons of snacks (remember I'm pregnant) and drove to all the 'best spots' in my new neighborhood for vintage and antique shopping. It was such a joy to find so many lovely things... But what's even more amazing is all the antique jewelry I discovered... and this almost never happens! I left a ton of exquisite pieces behind... however, I do plan to scoop up the remaining of the baubles and bits on my next shopping trip.

Hello! I’m Sienna, the gal behind Aria Parfait Vintage. I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and graduated from Eastern Michigan University with an oh-so-lucrative art degree. After graduating, I joined a national organization which recruits recent college graduates to teach in high-poverty schools for two years, which brought me to Tulsa, OK. I love art books, coffee and sitting on the balcony of my 1920’s apartment.

Tell us a little about your shop?
All items in the shop are garments and accessories I would wear, or were in my personal collection and would like for them to have a new, well-loved life with someone else. I’m completely lost in a department store and generally just don’t like the fashions, fabrics, prints and quality of garments available today and I know I’m not the only one. I’d like to outfit the other gals out there who are also underwhelmed by department store fashions with unique, carefully selected pieces.

What inspired you to start your own vintage shop?
I’m into week 7 of my second year teaching and my first year was, how shall I put it, ROUGH. I’ve always been a thrifter, but I found myself using it as a therapy of sorts and with all the great flea markets and antique stores in the area I was coming across loads and loads of fantastic vintage. I began scooping up all sort of items - some that fit and some that didn’t -and began to grow a collection; a collection far outside the ability of one preschool teacher with next to no social life to wear. The idea of one day opening a store seemed like a far off option as teaching is incredibly time consuming and exhausting but then... then the glorious, wonderful summer came. With a lot of encouragement from friends and a lot of help from my very supportive boyfriend, I decided selling on Etsy would bring year two of teaching some much needed happiness and non-teacherly creativity.

What pleasures do you gain from being your own boss?
I love teaching and I love my students. However, being able to take a breath and do something completely unrelated to my more than full-time job is wonderful.

Take us through a typical day of running your business?
Each day is different. Establishing a routine so early on is quite difficult as I’m still not sure what works best for me. Before opening, I made an elaborate, all-encompassing inventory spreadsheet which I spent days creating and I hardly use it. The only thing that seems typical at this point is fitting shopping, photographing and listing into the short weekends. My students and their families occupy most of the work-week leaving some time for answering customer questions and packing and shipping.

How would you describe your customer?
Women who value quality, history and uniqueness.

Do you have a favorite time period?
I love all things 1940s. The cuts and shapes of the 40s are very appealing and I think they fit me well.

When you find yourself in a ‘creative rut’ (if so) how do you overcome those obstacles?
I have to take breaks. Usually I’ll focus on another aspect of the shop or I’ll look at what other shops and artists are doing for a kick of inspiration. There are a lot of really fantastic shops out in Etsyland and perusing blogs, Pinterest and flickr tend to bring my motivation back.

What type of successful tools would you share with an inspiring shop owner?
Your photographs are your first line communication with potential customers. Purchase a good camera, a tripod, one of those fun little wireless remotes and establish a uniform look for your items.

Please tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, I'm Giana and I run The Greedy Seagull. I live in Astoria, Queens, right outside Manhattan with my husband and chihuahua. I'm originally from southern California; I moved here 4 years ago after graduating college with an art history degree. I needed a change and good job, and though I never thought I'd end up owning a vintage business, I certainly found both!

Tell us a little about your shop
My shop is my baby. I hand pick every item for quality, wearability and uniqueness. I love to stock sturdy leather basics that will last forever, feminine dresses, and well made wardrobe staples for ladies of all sizes and shapes. Though I will sometimes stock rather flamboyant pieces that I can't resist, you can always count on finding things in my shop that work with a modern wardrobe.

What inspired you to start your own vintage shop?
I've worn and loved vintage since I was 12, and have always been a bit of a hustler so selling vintage kind of came naturally to me. Like a lot of people, I just had too much in my own closet because I couldn't bear to leave things behind that didn't fit. I also needed something to do while my husband was in law school studying all the time, and I figured it may as well make some money.

What pleasures do you gain from being your own boss?Gee, where do I even start? I like the fact that I only answer to myself and that I don't have to do the same thing every week. I love that if I feel tired or sick, I can sleep in a few extra hours or take a nap. What I love the most is that I can see a direct correlation between how hard I work and my income; it's what keeps me motivated!

Take us through a typical day of running your business
I don't really have a typical day; sometimes I plan to do one thing and end up in another state if I get a good lead for vintage. When I'm not out buying, days often go like this:
I wake up when my husband does and make his breakfast and get him out the door. I answer convos from the previous night and list new items. I pull out items for afternoon photos and steam, mend and prep them. Mid afternoon, I start packing up orders for the post office. I take photos late afternoon when the light is good, then walk packages to the post office. When I come home, I edit pics and measure things. I go to the gym and cook dinner, then often do more work when I'm done.

When I'm out buying, I usually get up at 4:30 am, caffeinate myself, and drive really far. I run around like a maniac scooping things up, drink more coffee and drive back.

How would you describe your customer?
My customers are the nicest people on earth, I swear. They are all ages and have different styles but all appreciate beautiful quality vintage.

Do you have a favorite time period?
I simply can't pick one favorite, but I love the 40's, 50's and 70's because they embodied romance and femininity. There was also a great attention to detail in cuts, prints, and embellishment during these eras.

When you find yourself in a 'creative rut' (if so) how do you overcome those obstacles?
When I'm in a rut I like to travel, even if it's just a nice long drive. I like to get out into nature, it's what inspires me most. Also, doing something physical like running or yoga helps to rewire my brain.

What type of successful tools would you share with an inspiring shop owner?
I recommend defining your signature style from day one. Needless to say it will evolve, but know what you do and don't love and stick with it. Reinvest your profits into your business in the beginning and buy the right tools, it will pay off. Also, be patient; successful businesses are not built overnight! And lastly, build solid relationships with your customers; you won't just make money, you'll make wonderful friends.

This week I really lucked up and found all sorts of wonderful goodies for the shop. Most of these pieces came from an estate sale (small town, south of Atlanta) ... And boy was I impressed! This dear lady had an amazing selection of retro handbags and furs to choose from. Although the fur was beautiful, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor little animals who suffered, therefore I opted out of purchasing any fur pieces. By the way, I'm 20 weeks (pregnant) and sometimes my loopy emotions get the best of me, causing me to have minor emotional breakdowns during random spurts of the day.

But on the flip side, I did get first dibs on the great handbags and happily purchased each and every one :) My absolute favorite is the oversize Southwestern Doctor Satchel and I swore to myself that I would absolutely NOT sell it... but somehow it has made its way into the shop :) I figured some sweet guy or gal could give it a great home and get much more use out of it.

1940s Art Deco BEADED FORMAL Evening Handbag

Found these two goodies yesterday while attending an estate sale -

This 1920s tapestry bag was made in Italy with excellent craftsmanship and still in impeccable condition. The shape is very similar to a saddle bag due to it's flap over closure. As for the 1940s art deco style, this piece is in mint condition. I believe it was only worn once or twice (if that) and tucked away for many years. The lining is clean and all beading is in tack. Both formal bags were owned by an older (and extremely elegant) lady named Mrs. Lambert who originally lived in Paris for most of her life. 1950s mink fur CASHMERE Cardigan

Bernhard Altmann first entered the textile trade in Vienna in 1915; in 1919 he founded his knitwear manufacturing business there. His company was very successful and it grew to employ 1000 people by 1938. But in that year the German Anschluss put his business under pressure, and he fled to London. His brother was taken prisoner by the Nazis and Altmann was forced to sign over the business in return for his release.

Altmann started a factory in Liverpool in 1938, which he had to abandon in 1939 as a result of the U.K. Enemy Alien Act of 1939 in which all nationals of enemy countries had to withdraw from coastline cities in three days after the declaration of war. They did not distinguish between Germans and displaced Austrian Jews, whose country had been absorbed into Germany.

After Liverpool, he immigrated to the United States, where he co-ventured a company in Fall River, R.I.. After two years he lost control of this last of his assets. In 1941 Altmann moved to New York, where he took a job at $50 a week. On March 3, 1943 he started a yarn trading company with a capital of $1250, which flourished.

The cashmere business started only in 1947, when he added the cashmere fiber line after a visit to Bermuda, where he learned that the delivery times of the Scottish manufacturers was over eighteen months, unheard of in the textile business. That business was built on a re-established Vienna factory, and another factory in Texas. By 1951 his U.S. company outsold all the Scottish manufacturers.

After Bernhard Altmann’s retirement in 1955, his successor first lost control of the Vienna business, and then sold off the U.S. operations to McGregor-Doniger in the 1970s. The trademark is still held by McGregor, which produces menswear under the Altmann label.

Bernhard Altmann was famous for his cashmere lines, but also produced clothes in Shetland wool and a lambswool/fur fibre blend called ‘Bernamere’. A 1960s advertising tagline for the company ran, ‘The Legend of a Great Knitter’.

1950s English Garden Peep Toes

Finding the perfect vintage shoe is hard to come by... especially if your foot is a size 5~

I can't seem to remember the story behind this particular pair (besides the fact it was made by D'Alexis, an exclusive designer in the 1940s-50s...) however they are stunning, made with excellent craftsmanship and of course is a size 5.5M ... not to mention now available in the shop.

1950s Philadelphia Dress

Last week in Philadelphia, a friend of mine had given me this stunning 1950s canary yellow dress. This particular one reminds me of the frocks my grandmother used to wear during her weekly shopping trips in the city. It was missing one button, so I decided to sew on a set of vintage opal buttons I purchased a while back in Florida. This piece will be in the shop later today.

This time around we toured the entire big apple (every nook and cranny of Manhattan) and sampled some tasty food along the way. My thoughts on New York?... "well, for starters I have my own personal theory that New Yorkers are living swell" due to everyone's casualty of shopping and eating out on the regular. For us Americans, it's that time of the year again... where we usually pack up our bags and head out of town for the holiday weekend... the 4th of July that is. Mr. Rugged and I have yet to make plans however I'm hoping we find a river or lake near by so that we may go tubing! :) Any nice tubing spots in Atlanta? Oh well, wish us luck!

Found this photograph on Design Sponge... There's an old timey, vintage essence about this shower curtain. I'm certainly am not a fan of the octopus creature, however I am a fan of this creepy yet slightly whimsical bathroom curtain.

The legendary Four Roses whiskey bottles were found in a cunning, country farm house 45 minutes south of Atlanta, Georgia. The old couple (late 80s) had all sorts of great antique finds, including the vintage Mary and Child wall decor and tons of retro cameras & clothing...which I've decided to keep for my personal stash. All of these items are now available in the shop.
